Nicolas Cage is playing himself in the new comedy called “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” and it might just be the top-rated movie in his portfolio. So far, it has a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s such a rare sight for any produced piece! While it’s not available worldwide yet, it has already premiered at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. Following the premiere, 15 critics published their reviews. Perhaps, the score will change as more comments pile in, but so far, it’s the highest-scoring film of the 170 titles featuring Cage on Rotten Tomatoes. Funny enough, Cage plays a fictional version of himself in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.” It also stars “The Mandalorian’s” Pedro Pascal as Javi Gutierrez. His character is a huge fan of Cage, who offers him $1 million to be at his birthday party.

In a curious twist, Gutierrez prepares a rabbit hole for Cage, where the latter goes through past roles. Then, he ends up in an action movie. It’s “a romp aimed at cultists who have sought out the Crazy Cage performances and forgiven the misfires in between,” said John DeFore from The Hollywood Reporter. “A commercial comedy that has a delirious good time poking fun at Nicolas Cage, celebrating everything that makes him Nicolas Cage — and, in the end, actually becoming a Nicolas Cage movie, which turns out to be both a cheesy thing and a special thing,” Variety’s Owen Gleiberman stated.

Other critics also said that everyone will find something interesting in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” – and they might be just right. After all, this film overthrew some of Cage’s best-scoring appearances, including 2021’s “Pig” and 2002’s “Adaptation.” The other titles with almost perfect scores are 1987’s “Moonstruck,” 1997’s “Face/Off,” 1993’s “Red Rock West,” and 1995’s “Leaving Las Vegas.” The latter earned Cage an Oscar for Best Actor. That said, he wasn’t too excited about acting as himself in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.” At first, he didn’t want to partake at all! “I turned it down three or four times, I wanted no part of it,” the actor told THR (The Hollywood Reporter)in an interview.

Moreover, he mentioned that after finally accepting the role, the filming process came crashing at him like a tidal wave. It was a total rollercoaster of emotions. “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” also stars “Catastrophe’s” Sharon Horgan. “That Awkward Moment” writer Tom Gormican directed the film and wrote the script with “Workaholics” writer Kevin Etten. In the end, as funny as it seems, Cage is not even planning to watch the perfect-score outcome.

It’s “just too much of a whacked-out trip for me. I’m never going to see that movie. I’m told it’s a good movie,” he said. “I won’t see it. But I do hope you enjoy it.” Take a look yourself in theaters on April 22.
